We are waiting for materials to put out the gas fire in Enugu: Official

Enugu Fire and Rescue Chief Okwudili Ohaa said the state’s fire departments needed ‘big equipment’ to put out the gas blaze in the Emene area of the city. ‘State.

Mr Ohaa said firefighters over the weekend used a slab cover to control the fire caused by natural gas near Caritas University, Amorji-Nike, Emene near Enugu.

The fire, believed to be caused by underground natural gas, occurred while drilling a water well at Caritas University, Amorji-Nike, Enugu on May 22.

However, he said the slab cover control could not properly cover the entire drilled hole and after a few hours the fire continued to rage at its former capacity due to the force of the gas.

“We haven’t given up hope. We are waiting for big equipment to lay a gigantic slab cover to put out the fire and some other heavy platforms to be on top of the slab cover to reinforce it against the force of the force gas,” he told reporters.

Said officials and fire trucks had been on the ground since the incident was reported around 9 p.m. on May 22.

“After dealing with the fire and stopping the inferno, other oil and gas agencies and NNPC will ensure that the gas leak is finally stopped,” he said.

Mr Ohaa said the state fire department had taken the necessary steps to ensure the blaze did not escalate beyond its current point.

“We have cordoned off the area and are making sure no one in the neighborhood is storing flammable materials.

“We also made students and community members aware that there was no need for alarm and that all necessary safety precautions had been taken,” he said.
