Kampong Chhnang’s first state-of-the-art water treatment plant to be built at a cost of more than $20 million in the province is set to start construction in September as the government has earmarked a site that includes a large lake to build installation.

On July 4, representatives of the Ministries of Public Works and Transport, Interior, Economy and Finance, and Environment together with the relevant authorities and the technical working group of the project held a meeting on its construction and on the management of landfills in the province.

Also discussed was the project to improve the management of the urban environment around Tonle Sap Lake under the concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank (AfDB) implemented in the province; construction of a landfill, which is now complete; and the construction of a network of sewers and treatment plants.

Provincial Governor Sun Sovannarith confirmed to the Post on July 5 that construction of the new sewage treatment plant will begin in September and is expected to be completed within the next two years.

“We will build this plant at Boeung Thom point in Kampong Chhnang city in the next two years by setting up a system according to AfDB standards,” he said. “This treatment plant will be built underground, and above it we will have a garden and public administration buildings, since the swimming pool will have a disinfection system before discharging the water into the river.”

Sovannarith also said that the AfDB and the Ministry of Public Works have already received bids for the construction of the plant and are now waiting for the construction tender deadline to pass.

He added that when the sewage treatment plant is completed, it will help prevent the discharge of sewage into the river and the plant will also help solve the flooding problem currently facing residents in the area. .

“This is the first state-of-the-art water treatment plant in Kampong Chhnang with a sewage system connected to the houses of the people of the province for about 40 km around, which we don’t have. have never had before. The sewage system connected to people’s homes will prevent sewage flowing directly into the river,” the governor said.

Sous Cham, a resident of Kampong Chhnang commune and town, said he was happy that a sewage treatment plant was built.

He expects that once the new sewage treatment plant and sewage system are completed, problems facing residents, such as flooding, will end and environmental problems in the river will be reduced. .

“I will be very happy if they build it, because in our provincial town water is flowing everywhere and clogging the drainage system. Flooding is a problem that we have had for two to three years because of the small size of the the drainage systems. They’re clogged and it’s flooding,” he said.
