Ironman surgeons at Tetbury Hospital raise funds for essential eye care equipment

Three members of the Tetbury Hospital eye care team will compete in an Ironman triathlon on Saturday June 11.

The challenge will start at the local Westonbirt swimming pool and end at Tetbury Hospital.

The Ironman team consists of John Ferris, consultant ophthalmologist, Nitin Anand, consultant ophthalmologist, and Jadie Cotterell, medical assistant and ophthalmic technician.

Nitin will kick off the challenge with the swim (2.4 miles), passing the baton to John for the cycling (112 miles) and finishing with Jadie running the marathon (26.2 miles).

The Ironman team raises funds for a new operating microscope for the day surgery unit. The existing microscope has served the department well, but now needs to be replaced.

Last year, over 1,500 cataract procedures were performed at Tetbury Hospital. The microscope is used on every cataract patient, making it vital equipment.

Throughout the day, Jadie, Nitin and John will be joined by other members of the eye care team, who will swim, cycle or run part of the Ironman course to support them along the way.

John Ferris said: “One of the few bright spots of the Covid pandemic is that many people, of all ages, have realized the positive impact exercise can have on our physical and mental well-being.

“After the first lockdown was lifted, I started commuting between my home in Birdlip and Tetbury Hospital on my bike. Cycling the same roads, watching the subtle changes in the Cotswolds countryside over of the seasons and embracing the weather in store, was an eye-opening experience.

“The idea behind this Ironman challenge was not only to set a test goal for Nitin, Jadie and myself, but also to inspire our great eye care team members to challenge themselves by swimming, by biking or running further than they have ever done before and in the process raise funds for our fantastic hospital.”
