Diaz-Naranjo, a staff sergeant in the Philippine Air Force (PAF), presented the donations to Maj. Gen. Adriano Perez, AFP deputy chief of staff for personnel, in a ceremony held at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City and in partnership with the Samahang Weightlifting Philippines (SWP). She was accompanied by her husband and coach, Julius Naranjo, and the president of the SWP, Monico Puentevella.

Donations included sets of rubber bumper plates, fractional rubber plates, fractional plates, a men’s and women’s lift bar and a platform.

“These new weightlifting equipment will further enhance the fitness facilities at headquarters and major special services offices,” Perez said.

“I hope this endeavor paves the way for more Olympic medals through our soldier-athletes,” he added.

Through donations, Diaz-Naranjo and Puentevella have expressed a desire to make weightlifting part of the joint AFP-Philippine National Police (PNP)-Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Olympics, its own version of the globally recognized sporting event.

The donations will be distributed to the AFP Office of Special Services (OSPS) and special service units of the PAF, Philippine Navy (PN) and Philippine Army (PA).

Diaz is the first Filipino to win an Olympic gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Japan.

She is currently assigned to the PAF Civil-Military Group stationed at Villamor Air Force Base in Pasay City. She was placed on secondment with the AFP OSPS and is part of the national pool of athletes under the supervision of the SWP.
