A Burton on Trent-based leisure business has grown and created jobs after securing £2.4million in funding from HSBC UK.

Branston Golf and Country Club used a cash injection to help the business with its regeneration plans, following a management buyout before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The transformation includes the development of a health club, a 17m swimming pool, conference rooms, a nursery and a 2,000 square foot gymnasium, as well as extensive maintenance of several golf courses.

Branston Golf and Country Club has created ten corporate jobs, created to manage and support the promotion and operation of the club’s new and improved facilities.

Following its expansion, the company expects a 25% increase in turnover.

General Manager Ben Laing said: “The support from HSBC UK has allowed us to extend our investment over a longer period.

“Consolidating the investment into one package will allow us to increase the rate and volume of all revenue streams, resulting in steady and consistent growth across all business sections.

“As we operate in the premium segment of the market, this investment has enabled us to provide the highest quality of service and facilities to all of our members and customers.”

Paul Armstrong, Regional Director at HSBC UK, added: We are pleased to be able to support businesses in areas that are still recovering from the impact of the pandemic, such as Branston Golf and Country Club.

Only a quarter of Pfizer’s COVID-19 treatment orders will go to developing countries https://mitchspoolservice.net/only-a-quarter-of-pfizers-covid-19-treatment-orders-will-go-to-developing-countries/ Mon, 21 Nov 2022 15:37:14 +0000 https://mitchspoolservice.net/only-a-quarter-of-pfizers-covid-19-treatment-orders-will-go-to-developing-countries/

By

Some countries could pay ten times the price of the generic equivalent of Paxlovid, as WHO chief calls for access to treatment to fight acute and long-lasting COVID-19

Rich countries got nearly three times as many courses of a World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended COVID-19 drug, Pfizer’s Paxlovid, according to a new analysis from Oxfam and the People’s Vaccine Alliance .

Using new data from Airfinity, organizations have found that only a quarter of treatment orders will go to low- and middle-income countries, despite the fact that they represent 84% of the world’s population and have a much greater need. regarding fewer people are vaccinated against COVID, unlike wealthy nations who are largely protected.

On the eve of tense talks at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over intellectual property rules for COVID-19 treatments and tests, campaigners warn we are seeing the same worrying trend of inequality we have seen with COVID vaccines.

Pfizer’s monopoly also means some middle-income countries could pay ten times more for Paxlovid than a generic equivalent, with reports of them being quoted up to $250 per course. This despite the fact that other low-income countries will have access to a Clinton Health Initiative (CHAI) deal with Pfizer and undisclosed generic companies, which means they could access the treatment for just $25 per Classes.

“When vaccines were our main medical tool to fight COVID-19, big pharma prioritized maximizing their profits by selling doses to wealthier countries,” said Dr. Catherine Kobutungi, executive director. from the African Center for Population and Health Research. “Millions of people died as people in low- and middle-income countries were sent to the back of the vaccine queue. And now we are seeing a repeat of the same inequity with COVID-19 treatments and testing. »

“Oral antiviral treatments are easy to administer. They reduce hospitalizations and deaths. And they can reduce the likelihood of a long COVID. Yet, at present, they are almost exclusively accessible to people in the wealthiest countries,” she added. “The fact is, if you are a vulnerable person with COVID-19 in a high-income country, you will likely have access to treatments that can help you survive. If you live in a low-income country, you probably won’t. It’s a grotesque inequality and it kills.

WHO recommends using Paxlovid to reduce COVID-19 hospitalization and death rates, and called for equitable global access to COVID-19 drugs as part of a long COVID strategy . A recent unexamined study suggests that Paxlovid may reduce the risk of patients developing long COVID.

There are hundreds of other potential COVID-19 drugs in development, including at least 77 in late-stage clinical trials that may be more effective and have a wider scope of use. However, intellectual property rules give a small number of companies a monopoly over supply, distribution and price, which means that low- and middle-income countries are unlikely to have affordable access to Neither do these drugs.

Because far fewer people in low-income countries are vaccinated than in rich countries, they are more vulnerable to hospitalization and death from COVID-19. These countries have already seen the highest death toll of the pandemic, a trend that could continue without access to treatments like Paxlovid.

“After the inequity they faced with the rollout of the vaccine, developing countries are now facing issues of access and affordability for COVID treatments. It’s a shame that those who need it the most receive the fewest and that patent laws give Pfizer a long monopoly on this life-saving drug,” said Jennifer Reid, senior health and vaccine equity adviser at Oxfam. Tackling both acute COVID and long COVID is essential – and the WHO has made it clear that countries need treatments like Paxlovid to reduce deaths and hospitalizations. But the patent minefield is a huge obstacle preventing many developing countries from getting the medicines and tests they need now and in the future to save lives.

In June, after a year and a half of negotiations, the WTO rejected proposals to waive intellectual property rules for all COVID-19 medical technologies, adopting a much more limited text that only covers vaccines. Ahead of talks in Geneva tomorrow, civil society organizations are urging WTO member states to immediately agree to an extension to include treatment and testing, which would allow developing countries to produce for their own populations and export for others in need, ensuring essential tools are accessible and affordable.

“Decades ago, governments allowed pharmaceutical companies to control the price, allocation and supply of life-saving HIV drugs – and millions died without affordable access,” said Mohga Kamal Yanni, People’s Vaccine Alliance Policy Co-Chair. “Now the same is happening with COVID-19 vaccines and drugs. Corporations have been allowed to decide who lives and who dies. WTO member states must ensure that public health takes precedence over commercial interest.

Notes to Editors

A new People’s Vaccine Alliance briefing note on the case for extending the WTO Ministerial Decision to therapeutics and diagnostics is available here: https://peoplesvaccine.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/A-fact-based-case-for-the-extension-of-the-TRIPS-COVID-19-decision.pdf

Data from Airfinity shows that the wealthiest countries which represent only 16% of the world’s population will receive 74% of all courses ordered from Paxlovid. Low- and middle-income countries that represent 84% of the world’s population will receive only 26%. Although it was first authorized in December 2021, reports suggest few doses are available to people in low- and middle-income countries.

Although there is little data available on how many doses of Pfizer’s antiviral treatment have actually been delivered to low- and middle-income countries, they have been waiting for months to receive doses through Paxlovid supply agreements d global initiatives like UNICEF and the Global Fund. Pfizer reportedly insisted that the prices of these agreements remain secret, and the initiatives did not reveal the prices charged by Pfizer for the courses under their agreements.

Data Note: These figures reflect agreements with Pfizer. A number of generic manufacturers believed to produce Paxlovid have signed agreements through the Medicines Patent Pool. However, these agreements are not expected to produce/export finished pharmaceuticals on a large scale until early 2023.

  • According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), there are at least 1,465 patents on treatments and 417 on vaccines for COVID-19, making it a “minefield” for developing countries.
  • Two years ago, South Africa and India proposed a waiver from the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) for medical technologies related to COVID-19, including vaccines, tests and treatments. The waiver was backed by more than 100 low- and middle-income countries, but was blocked by a small number of wealthy countries, including the EU, UK and Switzerland.
  • After 18 months, the WTO finally decided in June 2022 to streamline existing rights to use compulsory licenses to produce generic COVID-19 vaccines for domestic use and for export without authorization from the patent holder. . The June decision required member states to reach a decision on testing and treatment by December 2022. Negotiations to reach a decision on testing and treatment are ongoing. The WTO TRIPS Council will then meet on Tuesday 22 November.

Marine North Berwick offers a Sunday Dine and Unwind Package https://mitchspoolservice.net/marine-north-berwick-offers-a-sunday-dine-and-unwind-package/ Mon, 21 Nov 2022 10:21:25 +0000 https://mitchspoolservice.net/marine-north-berwick-offers-a-sunday-dine-and-unwind-package/
North Berwick Marine Spa Photo: A Baxter

“Do you want access to the spa before or after Sunday lunch?” they asked, at Marine North Berwick.

There is only one sensible answer to this question.

No one wants to be seen in a bathing suit after getting their face stuffed. I would look like Moby Dick. It would scare the other guests.

We were taking advantage of the new Sunday Dine and Unwind package at this hotel in East Lothian. If you eat from the Sunday menu, with no minimum spend, they will receive two hours of free access to the spa.

We arrived at 11am, to take full advantage of our time. It’s not my first visit here, and the spa, which now offers treatments by French brand Caudalie, is much as I remember, although the 19th-century Victorian golf hotel has been taken over by the American company Marine & Lawn last year.

There is the pool, but we skipped that as we didn’t plan on exercising. However, there’s also a bubbly hydropool, which extends outdoors, and features a gooseneck fountain and tiled beds.

Inside, you will find two saunas, one of which is infra-red, a pair of hammams, massage showers and an ice fountain to refresh you. We went around each one, twice.

Although we had lunch reservations at 1pm, something about North Berwick’s air-combined heat treatments whetted our appetites. Fortunately, The Lawn restaurant was able to seat us earlier, at 12:30.

There seemed to be quite a few other tables taking advantage of the deal. We identified them by their rosy cheeks and wet hair.

There is a good selection of dishes on the Sunday lunch menu. We both had the citrus cured salmon starters (£11) which were great, but we should have skipped the forerunner and gone straight to the roast beef (£22) as it had such a monolithic portion. You really don’t need anything else.

We each had three huge slices of dry aged Scottish roast beef, duck fat roast potatoes, herb carrot, creamed greens, horseradish sauce, heaps of gravy and coppery Yorkshire puddings that were so huge we could have sailed to the Bass Rock in them. There are other options to choose from, such as plaice (£24) and truffle macaroni and cheese (£14), but unless you’re vegetarian or vegan why would you want anything else when they do an excellent plate like that?

Puddings include sticky toffee (£8) or apple tart tatin (£8), but we were full.

That’s so much, with no closing date. Remember to eat after the spa, not before.

10-day-old baby seal transferred to Athens for treatment (PHOTOS) https://mitchspoolservice.net/10-day-old-baby-seal-transferred-to-athens-for-treatment-photos/ Sun, 20 Nov 2022 11:15:50 +0000 https://mitchspoolservice.net/10-day-old-baby-seal-transferred-to-athens-for-treatment-photos/

An orphan seal pup aged just 10 days was found on a beach in Crete in early November and traveled to Athens to be cared for by the Society for the Study and Protection of the Mediterranean Seal (MOM) until that it is old enough to be released into its natural environment.

Port authorities, who located the seal with the help of local people, contacted the organization for instructions on how to properly handle the incident to keep the animal safe.

The Society for the Study and Protection of the Mediterranean Seal – MOM was founded in 1988 and has been taking care of orphaned or sick seals since 1990 until today.

“This year we have two little ones. Hermes was found in October at Pili in Euboea and now in November Minos has come to us from Crete, from Sitia,” MOM biologist Eleni Tounda told AMNA.

“Both are babies, this is when they would normally be breastfed by their mothers but they got carried away by the storms, they were sick too.

“We give medicines in consultation with the veterinarian in charge and we hope that after the three months we have them here, we will release them back into their natural environment, as we do every time.”

The seal, which was named Minoas because it was spotted in Sitia, is housed in specially designed areas and a swimming pool where it is monitored by a veterinarian and cared for daily by MOM specialists.

Weighing, bathing, gradually changing from fish paste to training to learn how to eat fish and how to swim are on the daily program of the baby who keeps company with Hermès, also an orphan seal spotted in October in Euboea.

As Ms. Tounda explains, “because the seals are at an age where they would suckle from their mothers, we now feed them fish paste with essential vitamins, until they move on to the next stage, which will be to give them fish to eat. And after they reach about 60 kilograms and learn to eat fish, we release them.”

Seals are wild mammals and when they approach beaches or harbors it is extremely important for their own welfare and survival that people avoid contact with them.

Citizens, if they spot seals, are asked to move away, not to seek contact and, of course, not to feed them. If they think the animal may be in trouble, they are advised to call the Port Authority and MOM immediately.
